Sharks re-sign two forwards in Rudolfs Balcers and Joachim Blichfeld

The San Jose Sharks prevented a pair of young forwards from hitting the restricted free agent market Thursday, announcing new contracts for Rudolfs Balcers and Joachim Blichfeld.

The club did not reveal financial specifics for either deal, though the team shared that Balcers was locked up for the next two seasons and Blichfeld for one year.

The (San Jose) Mercury News reported that Balcers will make $3.1 million over his two seasons. According to the newspaper, Blichfeld’s one-year, two-way deal is worth $750,000.

“We were excited to bring Rudolfs back to our organization last season and he became an important part of our lineup in what was his first full NHL season,” said GM Doug Wilson. “He showed that he is a versatile forward who can provide offense for our club as a Top-9 forward. We are happy to have him.

Balcers, 24, posted career highs this past campaign, his first with San Jose, with eight goals, 17 points and 41 games. Originally a Sharks fifth-round draft pick in 2015 who was later traded to the Ottawa Senators before the 2018-19 season, the Latvia native was claimed off waivers by San Jose in January.

Blichfeld, who turned 23 last week, was a seventh-round draft choice by the Sharks in 2016 out of Denmark. He has one goal in eight games over the past two seasons with San Jose.
