NHL Rumors: Tarasenko still wants a trade, Chiarot drawing interest, and several teams in on J.T. Miller

The NHL Rumor Mill is going to pick up steam as we have gone past the quarter mark of the season. Trades on the other hand may not come any time soon. Too many teams are still very much in playoff races, but once the Christmas break passes we could see a few deals.

One player who requested a trade over the summer is still with his team and playing well.

NHL Rumors: Vladimir Tarasenko still wants a trade

Tarasenko, 29, has 19 points in 23 games with St. Louis. The Blues are also in a tight playoff race in the Western Conference.

Frank Seravalli of The Daily Faceoff recently put out his top trade targets list and ranked Tarasenko third. “He’s still hoping that the Blues will in turn honor his desire to be moved,” Seravalli writes. “His trade request from the summer has not been rescinded.”

Tarasenko has one more year left on his deal worth $7.5M AAV. Word out of St. Louis is that they refuse to retain any of his salary in a trade. For some contenders that might be interested, they will require a third party like the Arizona Coyotes to retain salary in order to squeeze in his cap hit.

This is a deal that is more likely to happen at the trade deadline, or even at the draft.

Ben Chiarot is drawing interest

The Montreal Canadiens have gone from Stanley Cup runner-up to potential lottery pick in a hurry. As Jeff Gorton gets set to take the reins as the Executive VP of Hockey Ops, he will have one highly sought commodity to deal.

Chiarot, 30, has six points in 25 games this season. He’s a veteran left shot defender who makes just $3.5M on the cap and is a pending UFA.

“Ben Chiarot, who is a pending unrestricted free agent, I spoke with a few contending teams today who value him greatly and here’s a guy who can absolutely fetch a first-round pick given the dearth of rental defensemen available,” Pierre LeBrun said on Insider Trading.

Several of those contenders looking for some help on defense are potentially the Islanders, Avalanche, Leafs, and Oilers.

J.T. Miller has no shortage of suitors

Another name that has now entered the trade rumors chat is Vancouver Canucks forward J.T. Miller.

The 28 year-old has one more year left on his deal worth $5.25M before becoming a UFA. He’s also been extremely productive with 23 points in 24 games for Vancouver this season. Since joining the Canucks he has 141 points in 146 contests. For his career, Miller has posted 378 points in 581 games.

A number of teams have been circling around Miller (including one of his old teams, the New York Rangers) amid the Canucks’ disastrous season, although it seems as if GM Jim Benning does not have the full autonomy to make a core-altering trade at the moment.
