NHL Rumors: Trading Pietrangelo’s rights, Capitals backup goalie search, Tony DeAngelo hopes he stays with Rangers, and more

NHL rumors for today kicks off with one of the biggest UFA’s available on the market, Alex Pietrangelo. Then we head over to Washington D.C. and check in on the Caps backup. Let’s get to it as there’s plenty to cover.

NHL Rumors – Will the Blues trade Alex Pietrangelo’s rights?

Talks between the Blues and Alex Pietrangelo have broken down. A lot of this hinges on the fact the Blues are unwilling to add a no move clause and front load the deal with signing bonuses. Now the Blues need to decide if trading his rights for a draft pick is worth it.

Three teams are said to be very interested in Pietrangelo, and could be willing to give up a mid-round pick for just the ability to talk with him before October 9th. Those rumored teams are the Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, and the Vegas Golden Knights. It was also noted at one time the Boston Bruins could make a play for him when he hits the market.

Islanders goalie, Thomas Greiss has said he will test the market this offseason. One team now rumored to be interested in his services are the Washington Capitals. With Braden Holtby leaving via free agency, the Caps will need a good backup for Ilya Samsonov.

NHL Rumors – Tony DeAngelo hopes to not get traded at the draft

On the newest episode of Tony DeAngelo’s “Watch Your Tone” podcast, he revealed that he believes a lot of RFA’s will be traded at the draft for picks on October 6th. Tony, who is an RFA himself said, “I got through the last couple of drafts, I am trying to sneak through one more.”

This has a lot to do with the flat cap and teams that are either at or over the cap coming in. He also thinks we will see a lot of buyouts as well. DeAngelo may have heard the same thing on Henrik Lundqvist his teammate Libor Hajek did.

NHL Rumors – Penguins open to trading Rust

A report in the Athletic reveals that a few teams have inquired about Rust. It should be noted that the Penguins are not actively shopping him but they don’t consider him untouchable.

If Pittsburgh can land the right package for him they would consider it. The ask according to the report is “at least an NHL-ready player and a top prospect.”
