NHL Rumors: Patrik Laine’s comments reignite trade buzz, Alex Ovechkin not worried about contract, and Mathew Barzal update

“I’m here aren’t I?”

That was Patrik Laine’s response to a question about trade talk by his agents. Not exactly super confidence boosting if you are a Winnipeg Jets fans.

NHL Rumors: Patrik Laine’s comments sparks more trade buzz

Laine met with the Winnipeg media and was bombarded with questions about his contentious offseason with the Jets. The comments from his agents are well documented, and a trade seems inevitable, but he was trying to brush it aside.

“That’s the only thing I’m worried about right now,” the 22 year-old sniper explained. “I’m not in charge of what other people are saying. I’m not worried about that stuff.”

Of course, his next comment was probably even more telling than his open. “Even Wayne Gretzky got traded,” Laine exclaimed.

Buckle up Jets fans, this ride is going to get bumpier.

The greatest player to ever lace em up for the Washington Capitals has no contract for next season. At 35 years of age you would think he’d be worried, but this is Alex Ovechkin we are talking about.

“We have plenty of time,” Ovechkin said casually. “Of course, it’s one year. I’ve been in this position 13 years ago, right, when I have to sign a deal and worry about this kind of stuff. But right now, I’m 35; I understand everything and I’m kind of experienced guy.”

His longtime center, Nicklas Backstrom joked that if Ovi wants he could be his agent. A deal will get done, that’s all you need to know.

Latest on Islanders and Mathew Barzal

Mathew Barzal is listed on the Islanders training camp roster but still has no contract. He took his physical and remains on Long Island but concerns continue for Isles fans.

According to the Fourth Period, a long-term contract is not in the cards. The two sides continue to talk and the belief is a bridge deal is imminent.
