NHL Rumors for August 10, 2020 are centered around the expected fallout from another disastrous postseason for Toronto. Also in the rumor mill, Jesper Fast should be hitting the UFA market as the Rangers just don’t have room for him. Finally, we make a pit stop in Florida for GM news.
NHL Rumors Toronto Maple Leafs
The drought for the Stanley Cup continues in Toronto as it now reaches 53 years without one. The longest time between championships was the New York Rangers with 54 years (1940-1994).
With the Leafs having last sipped from the Cup in 1967, and without at least a playoff win since 2004 changes are coming. One must wonder if GM, Kyle Dubas doesn’t lose his job over this last playoff ouster?
This season, the Leafs had a glaring problem in goal and he did not address it. Instead of giving up Kasperi Kapanen for Alexandar Georgiev as was rumored, he went the cheap route and acquired Jack Campbell from L.A.. On defense, Jake Muzzin wasn’t the answer (even if he would’ve been healthy).
In the NHL, you have to give to get. And sometimes you have to overpay in a trade in order to do so. That seems to be a lesson Dubas refuses to learn. It could cost him his job.
NHL Rumors: Will the Leafs trade one of their top four forwards?
There seems to be chatter that the Leafs may need to trade one of their top four forwards for a top defenseman. Interesting notion, however unlikely it may seem.
Let’s set it straight now, Toronto is not trading Auston Matthews, John Tavares, or Mitch Marner. If the right defenseman came along, William Nylander might become available. That’s the only one I could see moved.
NHL Rumors: Rangers unlikely to try and sign Jesper Fast
Jesper Fast, the Rangers Players’ Player Award winner is 28 years-old and likely moving on as an unrestricted free agent. Even if he were to stay, he would be reduced to third line duties as Kaapo Kakko moves up to the second line.
For the Rangers, it isn’t even a matter of money but of playing time for the Rangers reliable right-wing. If the team is truly committed to Vitali Kravtsov and Julien Gauthier for next season, he’s the odd man out on the right flank.
NHL Rumors: Florida Panthers looking for a new General Manager
The Panthers have informed current GM, Dale Tallon they are moving on.
“For the last decade, Dale raised the team’s profile, attracted key players to South Florida and brought character and class to our franchise,” Viola said. “When we purchased the Panthers in 2013, we did so with a singular goal — to win a Stanley Cup. We have not seen our efforts come to fruition. We will now begin an organizational search for the next General Manager.”Vincent Viola via Sportsnet
One former GM’s name that has been already linked to the Arizona Coyotes is coming up in Florida. Peter Chiarelli who was the GM in Boston before an abysmal run in Edmonton could be in the mix for the Panthers.
