NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs grant Zach Hyman permission to talk with other teams; and Vladimir Tarasenko’s trade list revealed
Things continue to heat up all around the league. Many predict this could be the craziest offseason we’ve seen due to the flat-cap and Seattle expansion. The fact that three major events take place within 8 days (Expansion Draft 7/21, NHL Draft 7/23-24, and Free Agency 7/28) all add to the excitement.

NHL Rumors: Zach Hyman can speak with other teams
According to Darren Dreger, the Toronto Maple Leafs have granted UFA Zach Hyman permission to speak with other teams. This is a clear indication that Hyman will not be returning to Toronto next season. GM Kyle Dubas is wisely trying to get an asset for Hyman’s trading rights.
During a recent radio spot on Toronto TSN 1050, Darren Dreger indicated the Edmonton Oilers are targeting Zach Hyman this offseason.
The 28 year-old Hyman is UFA and will make substantially more than the $2.25 million AAV he earns now. Estimates have him looking at 7 years with an AAV around $5.5 million range.
Vladimir Tarasenko trade list revealed
Vladimir Tarasenko has asked for a trade from St. Louis and the Blues are happy to accommodate his request. The 29 year-old has two years left on a deal that comes with a $7.5 million AAV and the ability to control his fate. Thanks to his contract which includes a 10 team trade list protection.
In a new report from Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic, he lists nine of the teams that the unhappy Tarasenko will accept a trade to go play. They include the Lightning, Capitals, Islanders, Rangers, Flyers, Golden Knights, Panthers, and Bruins. At this time, the tenth team is unknown.
I recently noted my top three destinations for Tarasenko as follows:
- The New York Islanders: Talk about a team that needs more offense. They have a little over $5 million in cap space so they will need to send money back to the Blues. Maybe Josh Bailey or Nick Leddy would be in the deal to make it work.
- Vegas Golden Knights: The team wants help on the power play and Tarasenko can supply that. Vegas has $6 million in cap space and are talking about trading a goalie to get more. This is one to watch.
- Washington Capitals: They will be signing Alexander Ovechkin after the expansion draft takes place and have vowed to take another kick at the Cup. It’s also possible they lose T.J. Oshie in expansion. Tarasenko will be a nice replacement here.
