NHL Rumors: Hurricanes want Patrik Laine, Rangers looking for face-off help, and more

Patrik Laine is a wanted man. Ever since his name came up on TSN’s Trade Bait List he’s remained a fixture in the rumor mill. From the Flyers, to the Blue Jackets and the Rangers in recent weeks, we now have another team to throw in the mix.

NHL Rumors: Hurricanes want to trade for Patrik Laine

According to TFP, the Carolina Hurricanes were talking with the Winnipeg Jets in the offseason. Talks came to a halt once Winnipeg started asking for both Brett Pesce and Martin Necas in the deal.

The stumbling block appears to be Carolina’s resistance to part with Pesce, whom multiple teams have expressed interest in and is slated for defensive second pair duty with Brady Skjei.

The Fourth Period

While many teams are mentioned with Laine, one thing seems to be certain. At some point the Jets are going to trade him. We just don’t know which team will pay the price…yet.

NHL Rumors: Rangers looking for veteran help at center to win face-offs

When it came to possible PTO candidates for the Rangers, Brian Boyle was certainly someone who made sense. It turns out the Rangers did indeed reach out to the former Blueshirts center.

That’s because Brian Boyle can do one thing very well, and that’s win key face-offs. The Rangers and several other teams have talked to the 36 year-old pivot about joining their respective clubs.

The Post has learned that the team has checked in with Boyle, who was one of the key forces through the team’s ascension at the start of the last decade. Let’s make it clear. A contract offer is not around the corner. As we understand it, management has advised Boyle that the team is taking a wait-and-see approach with the kids.

If Boyle does not sign anywhere and is still awaiting a call, it would not hurt to add him to the taxi squad on a deal for one year and under one million. Especially considering the Rangers struggle in the face-off dots the last few seasons (under 50%).

NHL Rumors: Islanders still trying to trade Leo Komarov

Mathew Barzal still remains unsigned.

While all evidence points to a deal getting done, GM Lou Lamoriello still has work to get cap compliant. He’s been peddling Leo Kamarov and his $3 million cap hit for months.

Still no takers.
