NHL Rumors: DeAngelo unlikely to be claimed, Flames trade talk, and Avalanche goalie situation

The NHL waiver wire is about to be update by Noon ET. Many wonder if Tony DeAngelo and his $4.8 million cap hit will be claimed by another team.

NHL Rumors: DeAngelo unlikely to be claimed

There’s been plenty of reports regarding Tony DeAngelo and his fallout with the New York Rangers. All of it has been detailed here.

The question now is will someone claim him? The thought process around the league is – no. So what will come next? The New York Rangers may try and terminate his contract or likely buy him out.

It is believe the Rangers tried to trade DeAngelo before signing him to a 2-year deal this offseason but to no avail. They could try and move him at 50% cap retention as well.

Regardless, DeAngelo’s time with the Rangers is done.

Sam Bennett has asked for a trade out of Calgary, and the Flames are in no rush to oblige him.

The big question now is whether Treliving is willing to sell low on a guy who was the highest draft pick in Calgary’s franchise history? That can be a tough trade to win, even if the production has never matched the potential. If the Flames offload Bennett, they will immediately be shopping for the same attributes, although preferably in a right-handed package.

UPDATE (MINUTES AFTER PUBLISHING)

I guess until Grubauer or Francouz win a Stanley Cup, people are going to be asking this question. In a recent mailbag edition on The Athletic, Peter Baugh provided some insight.

If Grubauer and Pavel Francouz are healthy, don’t count on the Avalanche trading for goaltending assistance. Bednar has expressed his faith in Grubauer as a No. 1 goaltender, and he’s rewarded that trust so far this season. Francouz played well in 2019-2020, posting a .923 save percentage. And remember, both goalies were hurt when the Avalanche lost in seven games to the Stars in the second round of the playoffs last year.
