Blues trade Jake Allen to Canadiens in cost cutting move to retain Alex Pietrangelo

The St. Louis Blues have begun their moves to shed cap space and re-up their captain, Alex Pietrangelo. In a trade that was recently announced, Jake Allen has been sent to the Montreal Canadiens.

Montreal send over two picks in the 2020 draft in exchange for Jake Allen and their seventh round pick. St. Louis adds a third and an upgraded seventh round selection from the Habs.

The real reason for the move is the shedding of Allen’s salary. St. Louis now has an extra $4.35 million in cap space to play with it, which is still short of being able to retain Alex Pietrangelo. Blues now have $6.4 million available.

The expectation is that Alexander Steen and his $5.75 million hit is next. If they do that, St. Louis will be in much better shape to not only retain Pietrangelo but also RFA, Vince Dunn.

Blues thank Allen

In a press release the Blues thanked Jake Allen for his time with the organization:

“I want to personally thank Jake for his dedication to the St. Louis Blues organization during his entire time as a Blue. He has always been a top-tier professional who has done everything we have asked of him. We wish Jake and his wife Shannon nothing but the best in Montreal.”
