NHL Rumors: Alex DeBrincat trade talks, Jeff Petry on the move, and more
The fact that the rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks are listening to offers for Alex DeBrincat has the NHL Rumors mill buzzing.
I keep asking myself why in the world would you trade him?
Here is a 24 year-old with another year left on his deal at reasonable at $6.4 million cap hit. It’s especially confusing when you consider he’s already scored 40+ goals twice in his young career. However, the rationale behind dealing DeBrincat centers around the fact that the Hawks don’t know if he’ll be a fit when they become competitive again. His next contract is also a potential concern.
Yet, when you stop and think about it both reasons seem pretty ridiculous. Regardless, the trade buzz is very real.
NHL Rumors: Alex DeBrincat
According to Pierre LeBrun, he states the Blackhawks have had ongoing talks with several teams. Chicago is looking for a futures loaded deal with high draft picks, prospects, and young players. Despite there being no guarantee a deal happens, many teams are in the mix.
One team that’s mentioned in his article at The Athletic are the Los Angeles Kings. But I have to believe that the New Jersey Devils are also a prime candidate. They are willing to trade the #2 overall pick in the draft and have players like Jesper Bratt and Pavel Zacha to sweeten the package.
Another team to consider are the Ottawa Senators, who have expressed a willingness to trade the #7 overall pick in this draft. The Anaheim Ducks, who have a deep prospect pool could also be a landing spot.
This past season, DeBrincat potted 41 goals and 78 points in 82 games.
NHL Rumors: Jeff Petry
Petry, 34, struggled this season with just 27 points in 68 games. With Montreal in a full rebuild mode they would love to trade him, but his $6.25 million AAV for three more seasons makes that difficult. Although, there could be a taker for his services this summer.
“The Dallas Stars are a team that has some interest in Jeff Petry, especially if they can’t resign pending UFA John Klingberg,” Pierre LeBrun said on TSN’s Insider Trading. “I can tell you right now there have not been any talks with Klingberg of late. It looks like he’s headed to the UFA market. So, Petry could be a landing spot in Dallas. I’m told Detroit is also a potential destination. Five or six teams have talked to Montreal recently about him.”
This offseason will be Petry’s best bet for a trade. If it does not happen at the Draft, maybe after some teams miss on UFA defenseman. One thing is for sure, GM Kent Hughes is not going to trade him for the sake of doing so.
While the Dallas Stars are rumored to be interested I still think the Canadiens will need to eat some of his cap hit. Speculation also points to the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders, and Carolina Hurricanes.
NHL Rumors: Jay Woodcroft extension with Oilers
According to Kevin Weekes, the Edmonton Oilers and head coach Jay Woodcroft are nearing a 3-year deal.
Woodcroft, 45, went 26-9-3 after taking over for Dave Tippet. He also took the Oilers to the Western Conference Final, where they were swept in 4 games by the Colorado Avalanche.
