NHL Recaps: Wild zap Bolts, Ducks blank Stars, and Devils clip Wings
NHL Recaps: January 4, 2023
Only three games were on the schedule around the National Hockey League on Wednesday night.
The Minnesota Wild played host to the Tampa Bay Lightning and sent them away with a loss. Meanwhile, John Gibson made Anaheim inhospitable by blanking the Dallas Stars to give the Ducks a win.
Finally, the New Jersey Devils went into Detroit and knocked the stuffing out of the Red Wings to help get their season on track.
NHL Recaps: Wild zap Bolts
Wild 5 vs Lightning 1
Calen Addison set a Minnesota rookie record with a goal and two assists, Kirill Kaprizov scored twice to tie a team record, and the Wild beat Tampa Bay in Saint Paul, Minn.
In producing three points for the second time in his career, Addison became the first Wild rookie ever with multiple three-point outings. Kaprizov extended his home point streak to 14 games, matching the mark set by Marian Gaborik in the 2007-08 season.
“I think it’s just playing with confidence, moving my feet,” Addison said via NHL.com. “I’ve been trying to focus on just getting pucks to the net, not necessarily on net, but around the net and just creating chances for the guys.”
Joel Eriksson Ek and Sam Steel netted goals, Matt Boldy had two assists and Filip Gustavsson made 34 saves for Minnesota. Brayden Point tallied on the power play for the Lightning, and Brian Elliott stopped 28 shots.
Ducks 2 vs Stars 0

Mason McTavish collected one goal and one assist and goaltender John Gibson posted his first shutout in 14 months as the host Anaheim Ducks blanked the Dallas Stars 2-0 on Wednesday.
“They had a good push in the third period, but we found a way just to keep them to the outside,” Gibson explained. “A lot of guys at the end there blocking shots, so it was a good team effort.”
Adam Henrique also scored for the Ducks, while Gibson made 35 saves for his 24th career shutout and first since Nov. 2, 2021.
Scott Wedgewood stopped 25 shots for the Stars, who lost two straight games in regulation time for the first time since Nov. 8 and Nov. 11. The Stars brought their fathers and mentors on a road trip through Southern California but dropped both clashes played on consecutive nights.
The Ducks went into the game with just one win in their last six games and five victories in their previous 22, sending them to the bottom of the Pacific Division, but they defeated the Central Division-leading Stars.
Devils 5 vs Red Wings 1
Dougie Hamilton, Jack Hughes, Alexander Holtz and Nico Hischier all had a goal and an assist to lead New Jersey over host Detroit.
Miles Wood had two assists and Vitek Vanecek made 32 saves for New Jersey, which has won both games against the Red Wings in Detroit this year.
“This was a great team win,” said Hischier, the Devils captain. “We had a lot of guys step up and make plays.”
