NHL Recaps: Tim Stutzle Hockeyville hero, Bolts winless in preseason, and more

NHL Recaps:  October 6, 2022

The preseason schedule showcased 6 games on the docket leading off with the Kraft Hockeyville match between the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators.

Two sites won Kraft Hockeyville competitions as Canada’s “most passionate hockey community” in 2020 and 2021. The games were postponed due to COVID-19 for the past two years. The first took place in Gander, Newfoundland, on Wednesday and the next will be in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, on October 8.

The NHL will officially open the 2022-23 season today with the NHL Global Series in Prague, Czechia. The Nashville Predators and San Jose Sharks will compete in two games, the NHL’s first regular-season action in Europe since 2019. The second contest is scheduled for tomorrow with information below.

Senators 4 vs Canadiens 3

Tim Stutzle scored on a penalty shot and added two assists to lead the Sens over the Habs in the first match of the Kraft Hockeyville series. Drake Batherson, Brady Tkachuk, and Claude Giroux also scored for the Senators. Kaiden Guhle, Kirby Dach, and Josh Anderson had Montreal’s goals. First overall selection Juraj Slafkovsky picked up his second assist of the preseason. Anton Forsberg (26 saves) out-dueled Cayden Primeau (29 saves) in this contest.

Panthers 3 vs Lightning 2

Only one team has failed to register even a single point in preseason action to date and it’s the Tampa Bay Lightning (0-4-0). The Panthers edged them out on goals by Zac Dalpe, Aleksi Heponiemi, and Brandon Montour. Nicholas Paul and Vladislav Namestnikov scored in the losing effort for Tampa. Andrei Bolts goalie Vasilevskiy stopped 38 of the 41 shots sent his way. Sergei Bobrovsky picked up the win for the Cats with 26 stops.

Blue Jackets 7 vs Blues 0

Columbus steamrolled the Blues in their exhibition matchup at home. Defenseman Andrew Peeke led the team in scoring with 4 assists as 13 of the 18 skaters all registered at least a point in the contest. Young star Yegor Chinakhov is having a tremendous preseason picking up his fifth goal. Patrik Laine, Zach Werenski, Jack Roslovic, Cole Sillinger, Justin Danforth, and Jakub Voracek notched goals in this contest. Danil Tarasov got the shutout on 24 saves.

Islanders 5 vs Devils 2

Mathew Barzal lit the lamp for the Islanders a day after signing a massive extension. His goal started the ball rolling with Noah Dobson, Ross Johnston, Anthony Beauvillier, and Aatu Raty getting the others. Semyon Varlamov made 26 saves for the victory. Ryan Graves and Graeme Clarke scored for New Jersey.

“It feels great and I can focus on hockey now,” Barzal said. “It’s where I wanted to be always, I always said I loved it here and I really do”

Wild 4 vs Blackhawks 1

Minnesota was victorious on goals by Marco Rossi, Frederick Gaudreau, Mats Zucarello, and Sam Steel. Jack Johnson scored the lone Hawks goal. Filip Gustavsson went the distance for the Wild making 25 saves.

Golden Knights 6 vs Kings 4

Vegas picked up the win over L.A. at a neutral site in Salt Lake City on two goals by Reilly Smith, who also added an assist. The Kings jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to Kevin Fiala and Gabriel Vilardi but couldn’t stop the Knights offense with Jack Eichel and Mark Stone picking up two assists each. Logan Thompson got the win for Vegas while Kings goalie Cal Petersen struggled again.
