NHL Recaps: Sharks surge in Germany, Claude Giroux nets first, and more

NHL Recaps:  October 4, 2022

The San Jose Sharks were in Berlin, Germany to take on Eisbaren Berlin of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga and came away with a victory.

On Monday, the Nashville Predators beat SC Bern to open the NHL Global Series Challenge. They will now take on the Sharks to open the 2022-23 season with two games in Prague on October 7 and 8.

The Blue Jackets and Avalanche will travel to Tampere, Finland, for two games on November 4 and 5.

NHL Recaps: Sharks win in Germany

Sharks 3 vs EIS 1

Eisbaren got on the board first with a goal by Giovanni Fiore but it was all San Jose after that. Tomas Hertl tied the game followed by goals from Steven Lorentz and Luke Kunin. Erik Karlsson picked up his third assist of the preseason. Kaapo Kahkonen and James Reimer combined for 18 saves in the victory.

Alex DeBrincat, Shane Pinto, and Claude Giroux all picked up a goal and an assist in the Senators win over the Habs. For Giroux, it was his first goal in a Sens uniform. Brady Tkachuk also got his first of the preseason and Tyler Motte notched his third. Anton Forsberg made 21 stops for Ottawa while his Montreal counterpart Sam Montembeault only stopped 18. Habs’ Cole Caufield registered his third exhibition goal.

Islanders 4 vs Flyers 3 (OT)

Noah Dobson’s first of the preseason was an OT winner for the Isles over the Flyers. Josh Bailey, Casey Cizikas, and Anders Lee were the other New York goal scorers. Bailey also added 2 assists for a 3 point game and Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves on 33 shots. Scott Laughton, Owen Tippett, and Tanner Laczynski notched the Philly goals.

Earlier in the day, the Isles signed Mathew Barzal to an 8-year extension with a $9.15M AAV.

“I’m a fan because Mat has the ability to raise his game and to be a special player,” Lamoriello said. “And now, with this contract and our faith in him, (it) puts that responsibility on him. We’re trusting that. It’s up to him to respond to that.”

Sabres 4 vs Hurricanes 2

Vinnie Hinostroza, Tage Thompson, Dylan Cozens, and JJ Peterka all scored for the Sabres to give the Hurricanes their first loss of the preseason. Veteran Craig Anderson went the whole way for the victory stopping 23 of 25 in the process.

Blues 4 vs Wild 2

Pavel Buchnevich recorded his third preseason goal and added an assist to lead the Blues over the Wild. Joel Hofer and Jordan Binnington split time in net for the win.

Ducks 5 vs Kings 4

Gabriel Vilardi scored twice for the Kings but it wasn’t enough to take down the Ducks. Max Jones scored twice for Anaheim to tie it and Frank Vatrano notched a PP goal in the third period for the Ducks win. Anthony Stolarz made stopped 36 for the Ducks and Cal Petersen allowed 5 goals on 32 shots for the Kings.

Golden Knights 4 vs Coyotes 3

Zachary Hayes scored twice with additional goals from Pavel Dorofeyev and William Karlsson to take down the Yotes. Adin Hill made 50 saves for Vegas in the contest. Barrett Hayton has goal and 2 assists as the lone Coyotes bright spot.
