NHL Recaps: Roman Josi shines in Switzerland, Oilers and Hurricanes win big, plus more

NHL Recaps:  October 3, 2022

The NHL Global Series Challenge got underway in Roman Josi’s hometown of Bern, Switzerland. In front of a 17,000+ adoring fans at PostFinance Arena, Josi led his Nashville Predators to a 4-3 win by scoring 2 goals and adding an assist over SC Bern.

“I’m really grateful I had the chance to do this,” Josi said. “It’s something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life and definitely one of my career highlights.”

Next up in the Global Series will be the Sharks facing Eisbaren Berlin of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga in Berlin on Tuesday.

The Predators and Sharks will open the 2022-23 season with two games in Prague on Oct. 7 and 8.

The Blue Jackets and Avalanche will travel to Tampere, Finland, for two games on November 4 and 5.

Predator 4 vs SC Bern 3

Roman Josi was given first star of the night honors for his efforts on a 3 point game. Filip Forsberg and Matt Duchene were the other Predator scorers. Kevin Lankinen stopped 15 of 18 shots. Hometown team SC Bern got a goal from Sven Baertschi, who played 10 years in the NHL with the Flames and Canucks. He made a 1 game pitstop with the Golden Knights last season.

Hurricanes 8 vs Blue Jackets 1

Carolina (4-0-0) blew the doors off Columbus and remain unbeaten in preseason action. Eight Canes players posted multipoint games with Martin Necas leading the way with 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points. Offseason trade acquisition Brent Burns registered his third goal in exhibition play and added 2 assists. Antti Raanta made 25 saves for the win. Yegor Chinakhov recorded his fourth goal of the preseason.

Oilers 7 vs Canucks 2

Rookie Dylan Holloway netted a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Oilers over the Canucks in a romp. Zach Hyman also had a goal and 2 assists in the winning effort with Jack Campbell turning aside 28 of 30 shots. Nils Hoglander and Conor Garland scored for Vancouver.

Maple Leafs 5 vs Canadiens 1

William Nylander and Alex Kerfoot each scored twice with the latter adding an assist in the Leafs rout of the Habs. Nicholas Robertson also picked up 3 assists and Matt Murray stopped 29 of 30 for the victory. Montreal’s first overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky picks up an assist on Jonathan Drouin’s goal.

NHL Recaps: Flames hand Kraken first preseason loss

Flames 4 vs Kraken 1

Blake Coleman recorded a goal and an assist as the Flames handed the Kraken their first exhibition loss. Chris Tanev, Michael Stone, and Noah Hanifin were the other Calgary scorers. Jacob Markstrom went the distance again making 21 saves. Matty Beniers picked up the lone Seattle goal, his third of the preseason.

Devils 1 vs Bruins 0

Vites Vanecek turned away all 24 Boston shots to pitch a shutout for New Jersey. Tomas Tatar picked up the only goal of the game in the first period. It was the veterans third in exhibition action.

Penguins 3 vs Red Wings 2

The Penguins held off a late Wings surge for a one goal victory with Casey DeSmith stopping all but two of the 39 shots sent his way. Bryan Rust, Josh Archibald, and Jason Zucker scored for Pittsburgh. Dominik Kubalik and Dylan Larkin were the Detroit goal scorers.

Avalanche 3 vs Stars 1

Artturi Lehkonen scored twice and recently signed free agent Evan Rodrigues added a goal with an assist to help the Avs beat the Stars. Pavel Francouz was the difference maker with 38 saves in this match. The Stars saw recent trade acquisition Nils Lundkvist register his second goal of the preseason.
