Unlike previous nights, there were no split squad doubleheaders. Instead, 22 teams squared off in 11 games across the league as they prepare for 2022-23 season which officially starts on October 7 in Prague with the Global Series.
NHL Recaps: Red Wings beat Pens in preseason action
Red Wings 6 vs Penguins 2
Dominik Kubalik, who signed as free agent this summer, scored twice help the Detroit Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins. Filip Zadina, Elmer Soderblom, Steve Kampfer, and Tyler Spezia also added goals. Sebastian Cossa and Victor Brattstrom combined for 31 saves.
Brock McGinnn and Bryan Rust tallied for the Pens. In goal, both Tristan Jarry (10 saves on 14 shots) and Casey DeSmith (5-7) struggled.
Hurricanes 5 vs Lightning 1
Carolina got goals from five different players to beat the Bolts 5-1. Andrei Svechnikov, Paul Stastny, Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, and Malte Stromwall. Frederik Andersen played the whole game and stopped 20 shots.
Vlad Namestnikov was the lone scorer for the Bolts
Devils 4 vs Islanders 1

Jack Hughes was one of four goal scorers to lead the New Jersey Devils over their rivals, the New York Islanders. Dougie Hamilton, Yegor Sharangovich, and Erik Haula also tallied. New goalie Vitek Vanecek made 13 stops on 14 shots in the contest.
Ilya Sorokin had a shaky preseason debut for the Isles allowing 3 goals on 12 shots. Nikita Soshnikov was the lone scorer.
Bruins 3 vs Rangers 2 (OT)
A.J. Greer helped the Boston Bruins overcome two separate deficits with 2 tallies, including the OT winner. Oskar Steen notched the other goal and Jeremy Swayman with the distance in goal with 24 saves.
Adam Fox and Alexis Lafreniere were the Rangers goal scorers. Vincent Trocheck making his debut after signing in the summer as a free agent added an assist. Jimmy Vesey, fighting for a roster spot on a PTO recorded 2 assists. Jaroslav Halak and Louis Domingue combined for 33 saves in the loss.
Lafreniere was injured late in the third after a shot went off his foot, but the Rangers say he is fine.
Wild 5 vs Avalanche 2
Former Avs forward Tyson Jost scored twice to help his new team to victory. Nic Petan, Vladislav Firstov, and Brandon Duhaime also notched goals. Filip Gustavsson and Zane McIntyre made 39 saves together.
Martin Kaut picked up a goal and an assist on Alex Newhook’s marker. Pavel Francouz played the entire game making just 21 saves.
Stars 4 vs Coyotes 3 (OT)
Mason Marchment scored two goals including the OT winner to help the Dallas Stars edge the Arizona Coyotes. Shayne Gostisbehere notched a goal for the Yotes in the loss.
Sabres 2 vs Flyers 1
Brandon Biro scored both goals for the Buffalo Sabres with Malcolm Subban and Craig Anderson combined for 20 saves in the win. Travis Konecny tallied for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Jets 5 vs Senators 3
Daniel Torgersson scored twice for the Winnipeg Jets to beat the Ottawa Senators. Kyle Connor also tallied and Connor Hellebuyck went the distance in net with 24 saves. Tyler Motte scored again for the Sens, his second of the preseason, and added an assist on Shane Pinto’s goal.
Blues 4 vs Blackhawks 1
Ryan O’Reilly opened the scoring with promising young defenseman Scott Perunovich notching third assist of the preseason. Jordan Binnington looked strong again stopping 20 of 21. Cole Guttman scored the lone Hawks tally.
Kraken 3 vs Flames 0
Daniel Sprong, Jaden Schwartz, and Andrew Poturalski scored for the Seattle Kraken, who are having early success in the preseason. Philipp Grubauer and Magnus Hellberg combined for the 25 save shutout versus the Calgary Flames.
Sharks 5 vs Ducks 4
The San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks threw the notion of defense out the window in this one combining for 9 goals.
Glenn Gawdin recorded two goals for the Ducks in the loss. Fours Sharks registered multi-point games in Jonah Gadjovich, Max Veronneau, and Danil Gushchin all had a goal and an assist. Tristen Robins had 2 assists.
