NHL Recaps: Avs rout Habs, Sabres rally over Leafs, and Stars sink Kraken

NHL Recaps:  March 13, 2023

It was a light Monday in the National Hockey League with just three games on the docket.

The Dallas Stars dumped the Seattle Kraken, while the Buffalo Sabres rallied big to take down the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, we start our recaps with the Colorado Avalanche routing the Montreal Canadiens but it came at a costly price.

Avalanche 8 vs Canadiens 4

Artturi Lehkonen scored two of Colorado’s four first-period goals, and added an assist before leaving with a broken finger against his former team as the visiting Avalanche won 8-4 over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night.

“He’ll leave tomorrow from Toronto to head back and then follow it up with surgery the next day,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. ” … I know he got hit with a shot.”

Valeri Nichushkin had a goal and two assists while Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon both recorded one of each for the Avalanche, who moved past the idle Winnipeg Jets for third place in the Central Division. Colorado goalie Alexandar Georgiev made 15 saves for the win.

J.T. Compher, Matt Nieto and Bowen Byram also scored as Colorado improved to 3-3-1 in March following its highest-scoring game of the season. Cale Makar registered three assists, and Devon Toews and Logan O’Connor had two assists apiece.

Josh Anderson produced a goal and an assist for Montreal, which was outshot 33-19 while falling to 0-5-2 this month. The Canadiens also got goals from Mike Matheson, Denis Gurianov and Jesse Ylonen, and Nick Suzuki notched two assists.

Sabres 4 vs Maple Leafs 3

Alex Tuch scored two third-period goals and visiting Buffalo came back to defeat Toronto.

“I thought we just got back to trying to work and make simple plays and then one line after another and another,” Tuch said via NHL.com. “It makes a huge difference out there, especially in the second period with those long changes.”

Dylan Cozens added a goal and an assist for the Sabres, who trailed 2-0 with just over five minutes left in the second period. Jack Quinn also scored as Buffalo won for the second time in eight games. Owen Power and JJ Peterka added two assists each, and Craig Anderson stopped 25 shots in the win.

Auston Matthews had a goal and two assists for the Maple Leafs, who had won their previous two games. William Nylander and Calle Jarnkrok also scored, and Mitchell Marner added two assists. Matt Murray made 25 saves.

Stars 5 vs Kraken 2

Jamie Benn had a goal and two assists as Dallas powered its way to a victory against host Seattle.

Jason Robertson, Joe Pavelski, Wyatt Johnston and Evgenii Dadonov each had a goal and an assist and Miro Heiskanen had three helpers for the Stars, who won their third game in a row. Jake Oettinger made 26 saves.

Yanni Gourde and Eeli Tolvanen scored for the Kraken, who lost their third straight (0-2-1) contest. Defenseman Vince Dunn added two assists to extend his point streak to a franchise-record 10 games, and Martin Jones stopped 27 of 32 shots.
