NHL News: Tyler Toffoli scores twice for Canadiens, Patrik Laine’s rough debut, and more

The Canucks (6-7) must be filled with regret letting Tyler Toffoli walk away for nothing this past offseason. Last night he scored twice and now leads the NHL with 9 goals as the Canadiens (7-1-2) beat his former team 5-3. To further make matters worse, 8 of those 9 goals have come against Vancouver.

“It’s just fun out there right now, and we’re just doing so well as a team and all the guys are getting along great,” Toffoli said after the big win. “So hopefully we can stick with it and stay together and keep getting better every single day, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Note: Canadiens captain Shea Weber played in his 1000th game.

NHL Scores: Laine’s tough start, Oilers starting to click

Patrik Laine made his his long awaited debut with the Blue Jackets (4-4-3) but it was spoiled as the Stars (5-1-1) went on to win 6-3. The Jackets new star attempted 7 shots but only got two on goal but felt he overpassed in the game.

“We were passing it around the outside a little too much,” Laine said afterwards. “It looks great, but we’re not creating any scoring chances. In the third, the guys tried to shoot the puck more.” Head coach John Tortorella wasn’t overly concerned and stated that Laine will continue to get big minutes going forward.

The Oilers (6-6) appear to be clicking as they took down the Senators (1-8-1) 4-2. Connor McDavid added two assists and continues to build on his point totals as he leads the NHL with 24.

In other action, the Hurricanes (6-1) topped the Blackhawks (3-4-4) in a shootout 4-3. The Blues (7-2-1) edged the Coyotes (3-5-1) 4-3 with Vince Dunn adding his 3rd goal of the season and upping his trade value.
