NHL News: Predators acquire Sens’ Kole Sherwood, Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy in COVID Protocol, and Oilers cancel practice
COVID-19 issues are ramping up around the NHL. Aside from tonight’s Islanders and Flyers postponement, the Bruins and Oilers are dealing with concerns.
Oilers cancel practice; place Cody Ceci on COVID list
The Edmonton Oilers placed defenseman Cody Ceci in the COVID-19 protocol Tuesday and canceled practice for what the team labeled as precautionary reasons.
The Oilers also shuffled Duncan Keith to injured reserve and recalled fellow defenseman Markus Niemelainen from Bakersfield of the American Hockey League.
Ceci, 27, has recorded six points (one goal, five assists) in 20 games this season.
Ceci has 149 points (38 assists, 111 assists) in 569 career games with the Ottawa Senators (2013-19), Toronto Maple Leafs (2019-20), Pittsburgh Penguins (2020-21) and Oilers.
Keith, 38, sustained an upper-body injury in Edmonton’s 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars last Tuesday.
He has five points (one goal, four assists) in 18 games this season.
Keith helped the Chicago Blackhawks hoist the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy during the 2015 Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 2009-10 and 2013-14.
Niemelainen, 23, has three points (one goal, two assists) in 14 games this season with the Condors.
Bruins coach on COVID protocol

Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy was placed in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol on Tuesday.
Cassidy was not present at the morning skate on Tuesday. Assistant coaches Joe Sacco, Kevin Dean and Chris Kelly are expected to guide the Bruins (11-7-0, 22 points) later that night when they host the Detroit Red Wings (10-9-3, 23 points).
Cassidy, 56, owns a 335-205-89 record during his six seasons with Boston. He sports a 252-136-48 record with eight ties in his coaching career with the Washington Capitals (2002-04) and Bruins.
Cassidy guided Boston to an appearance in the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals. The team fell to the St. Louis Blues in seven games.
He won the 2019-20 Jack Adams Award, presented to the best NHL coach annually.
Trade: Predators acquire Kole Sherwood
The Nashville Predators acquired forward Kole Sherwood from the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday in exchange for future considerations.
Sherwood, 24, has recorded one assist in 11 career NHL games with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Signed to a one-year, two-way contract this summer by the Senators, Sherwood has totaled four points (one goal, three assists) in 13 games this season for Belleville of the American Hockey League.
Sherwood entered the NHL as an undrafted free agent.
