NHL News: Patrice Bergeron named Bruins captain, Devils ink Sami Vatanen, and Arena Restart Protocols
A new era in Boston has begun as they have named Patrice Bergeron captain of the Bruins. He succeeds longtime captain, Zdeno Chara who is now a member of the Washington Capitals.

“There have been some tremendous captains and leaders along the way and some legends of the game,” Bergeron said yesterday. “It’s an absolute honor. I’m going to try and keep bettering myself and keep learning and leading by example, but also trying to be me.”
The 35 year-old is entering his 17th season with the Bruins. Last season he scored 56 points in 61 games and now is the unquestioned leader in the locker-room.
NHL News: Devils bring back Sami Vatanen
The Devils made a rock solid signing by bringing back Sami Vatanen for one year with a $2 million AAV.
Vatanen previously played parts of three seasons with the Devils, 2017-18 through 2019-20. In 154 games with New Jersey, he scored 12 goals and 56 assists for 68 points while adding 76 penalty minutes. Last season, Vatanen scored five goals and 18 assists for 23 points in 47 regular-season games all with New Jersey. He was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes at the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline in exchange for forward Janne Kuokkanen, defenseman Fredrik Claesson and Carolina’s conditional fourth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft (became third-round selection, 84th overall-Nico Daws). NHL Releases Arena Restart Protocols
When fans are allowed back into arenas the following protocols need to be adhered to:
- Face coverings for all guests over the age of 2
- Only medical grade masks or 3-layer cloth coverings
- But you can remove your mask to eat or drink
- Guests will be asked screening questions (unclear on temp check)
- Seating will be spaced with “pods” for families/friends
