New York Rangers rumors about Henrik Lundqvist, and more

New York Rangers rumors about Henrik Lundqvist are swirling. After being swept by the Carolina Hurricanes, what will Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers decide to do now? Before COVID-19, there was talks of a buyout for the final year of his deal or possibly a trade.

I don’t think a buyout is in the cards, as it will only save them around $3 million on his $8.5 million deal. While a trade could be figured out, this is a whole new world with a flat cap. Other contenders may not be able to afford him.

New York Rangers rumors on Henrik Lundqvist retirement

I first reported the rumor this morning at Forever Blueshirts. That was followed by a similar story this afternoon from the NY Post by Larry Brooks. Both stories in essence break it down as follows.

The next NHL season is going to start almost four months from now. Lundqvist spent a lot of time in Sweden during the pause and practiced with his brother Joel at Frolunda’s training facility.

Here’s what I know, the SHL season will start before the NHL’s. Henrik Lundqvist may very well retire and join his brother for one season with Frolunda. After that, he could make one last ditch for the Cup with a contender at 40.

A Lundqvist retirement will be a final gift to a franchise he’s given so much to. Should he do so, the Rangers will regain the full $8.5 million. Don’t get it wrong, Henrik wanted to finish his contract here, but the fallout from the pandemic may have changed his plans.

Joe Thornton rumors indicate a start next season in Switzerland

Joe Thornton rumors are not about him leaving San Jose. Instead, it appears Jumbo Joe may opt to play in Switzerland this fall in order to get ready for the NHL 2020-2021 season in November/December.

At 41 years of age, you would think a Joe Thornton rumor is about him retiring. Instead, it appears he could be heading to the Swiss league to get ready for next season.

Arizona Coyotes may need to move Antti Raanta

This summer will be all about keeping Taylor Hall in Arizona. That means some moving of salary and goalie Antti Raanta is a candidate.

Antti Raanta – Arizona Coyotes – The Coyotes will be close to the salary cap and they want to re-sign Taylor Hall. Moving the $4.25 million cap hit of Raanta would give them some needed space.
