Roman Josi, Cale Makar and Victor Hedman named Norris Trophy Finalists
The NHL announced the Norris Trophy Finalists on Monday and for the sixth straight season, Victor Hedman is up for the league’s best defenseman.
Also nominated are the the two leading candidates; Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators and Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche.

NHL announces Norris Trophy Finalists

The Trophy is named after James Norris, a Canadian businessman that owned the Detroit Red Wings, and is awarded to the defenseman that demonstrates the greatest all-around ability at the position. It is voted on by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
Hedman (Tampa Bay Lightning), who won the award in 2017-18, is joined by Roman Josi (Nashville Predators) and Cale Makar (Colorado Avalanche), who led defensemen with 28 goals in 2021-22.
The NHL honor is given to the top defensive player who “demonstrates the greatest all-around ability at the position” as voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
Hedman, 31, set career marks with 20 goals, 65 assists and 85 points and has finished third in Norris voting in three straight seasons.
The 31-year-old Josi, the 2020-21 winner, had a career-high 96 points in 80 games, including 23 goals. He led defensemen in scoring.
Makar was the runner-up for the award last year, finishing behind Adam Fox of the New York Rangers. The 2019-20 NHL Rookie of the Year, Makar had 86 points this season and his 28 goals led all defensemen. Makar, 23, is bidding to be the first member of the Avalanche to win the Norris.
