Capitals Punishment: Alexander Ovechkin will miss next four games, and names mounting on NHL COVID list

Yesterday the Washington Capitals were fined $100,000 for violating NHL COVID policies. The infraction was for not wearing a mask while with teammates in the hotel.

This landed Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Ilya Samsonov, and Dmitry Orlov in hot water and on the NHL’s COVID list. Head coach Peter Laviolette informed the media today that they are expected to miss the next four games.

Alex Ovechkin’s wife not pleased

On an IG post, Alex Ovechkin’s wife had some choice words for the NHL and questioning some of the logic behind the protocols.

“Of course, only Russian players of the Washington Capitals were in the same hotel room,” she began. “Of course, all of the other NHL players, when playing away, separating themselves from their teammates. Of course they can’t catch the virus when you and your teammates sit together on the bench, hug each other when they score a goal, or are all together in the lounge or locker room.”

She didn’t stop there and added, “Player’s can’t get infected when they are at restaurants, supermarkets, malls, etc..” The direct challenge came with the comment, “virus only works in hotel room. The one who came up with this rule, obviously is very logical!”

NHL COVID list gets 3 more names

The NJ Devils will be without the services of #1 goalie, MacKenzie Blackwood as he has landed on the NHL COVID list. Also added are Jon Merrill and Sam Gagner. Total number is at 21 (and counting).
