Bruins lock up defenseman Brandon Carlo to a six-year extension

The Bruins got to work on Wednesday. Defenseman Brandon Carlo signed a six-year contract extension to remain in Boston on Wednesday.
The team said the annual average value is $4.1 million.

“The Bruins are very pleased to have extended Brandon on a long-term deal,” general manager Don Sweeney said in a news release. “Brandon is a player who has grown into a foundational defenseman with our team while also emerging as an important leader on and off the ice.”
Carlo could have become a restricted free agent July 28.
Boston chose Carlo, a Colorado native, in the second round (No. 37 overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. He joined the team before the 2016-17 season and has 55 points (15 goals, 40 assists) in 324 career games.
Carlo, 24, was limited to 27 games in the 2020-21 season because of a concussion and upper-body injury and scored four points (three goals, one assist). He didn’t score in eight games in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Since his rookie season, the 6-foot-4 Carlo ranks second on the Bruins in shorthanded time on ice (908:57), fourth in games played, fifth in time on ice per game (20:13) and is tied for fifth in plus-minus (plus-58).
Carlo suffered a serious concussion at the hands of Tom Wilson
In a game in early March, Brandon Carlo had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance after a hit by Tom Wilson. He suffered a concussion and missed significant time last season due to it.
Wilson was not penalized for the hit, but was eventually suspended.
