Brandon Saad sees great fit with Blues; signs five-year deal worth $22.5M

The St. Louis Blues signed free agent forward and two-time Stanley Cup winner Brandon Saad to a five-year, $22.5 million deal Thursday.
The deal carries an average annual value of $4.5 million.
Saad played the 2020-21 season in Colorado after the Avalanche acquired the winger from the Chicago Blackhawks last October.

“From playing against them, they play a heavy game, they like to hold onto pucks, cycle pucks, protect it, and that’s all part of my identity as well,” Saad explained on why he was drawn to the Blues. “I think I can fit right into that aspect, as well as playing a 200-foot game… I think all the ingredients are there. I think it’s a team that definitely excites me, so I’m happy to be a part of it.”
Saad, 28, tallied 24 points (15 goals, nine assists) in 44 games this past season. The left-shot winger helped the Blackhawks to Stanley Cup titles in 2013 and 2015.
“I’ve won in my career, I’ve been fortunate,” Saad said. “And once you get a taste of it, there’s no better feeling. When it comes down to it, I want to go somewhere where I have another chance of winning. I want to have a successful team and the Blues fit that mold.”
Saad has scored 184 goals to go with 187 assists in 632 games with the Blackhawks (2011-15, 2017-20), Columbus Blue Jackets (2015-17) and Avalanche. The Blackhawks selected Saad in the second round of the 2011 draft.
The Blues lost left winger Jaden Schwartz to the expansion Seattle Kraken.
